The answer
Checked October 20, 2026: Sunlight Financial is usually not your lender. It arranges loans that partner lenders fund, and you pay the lender named on the first page of your loan agreement.[2] Sunlight went through a prepackaged Chapter 11 in late 2023; its plan took effect December 6, 2023,[7][14] and Sunlight Financial LLC still operates today.[1]
Our partner Solar Exit Group (Uso Holdings LLC) takes solar loans from any lender except Tesla. No cost to submit. Paid partner; it does not change our ratings.
Who is my lender if I have a Sunlight Financial loan?
Sunlight's help center says it "only facilitates loans" between the customer and the lender, that Sunlight works with multiple lenders, and that monthly payments are made to the lender, not to Sunlight. The lender is named on the first page of your loan agreement and on your monthly bill.[2]
Sunlight's homepage says certain Sunlight Financial loans are made through Cross River Bank, a New Jersey state-chartered bank and member FDIC. Its NMLS ID is 1670240.[1] Sunlight's autopay article also refers borrowers whose loans are already booked to their "credit union or banking partner".[3] So the name on your statement, not the Sunlight logo, tells you who holds the loan.

The Sunlight Financial Chapter 11 (2023)
| Date | Event | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Oct 30, 2023 | Sunlight Financial Holdings Inc. and four subsidiaries, including Sunlight Financial LLC, file Chapter 11 petitions in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware, jointly administered as In re Sunlight Financial Holdings Inc., et al., lead case No. 23-11794 (MFW). News reports put liabilities at $500 million to $1 billion | [13][14][6] |
| Oct 31, 2023 | Sale of its residential loan business to a consortium of Greenbacker Capital Management, Sunstone Credit, IGS Ventures and secured lender Cross River Bank (ED Umbrella Holdings, LLC) is announced; trade creditors, contractors and employees are told to expect full payment | [5] |
| Dec 6, 2023 | Sunlight files notice that the court confirmed its amended prepackaged plan and that the plan took effect (Docket No. 203); the old public shares are canceled | [14][7] |
| Nov 19, 2024 | Lead case No. 23-11794 is closed on the docket | [14] |
- What changed: who owns Sunlight. Public shareholders were wiped out under the plan.[7]
- What the sources do not say: none of the filings or releases we read says borrower loans were canceled or forgiven. Your loan agreement with the lender still sets your balance, rate and payments.[2]

Autopay and your interest rate
Sunlight says borrowers who enroll in automatic ACH payments get a 0.50% discount on their APR, and borrowers who pay another way may carry a 0.50% higher APR. Only checking accounts qualify. Once a loan is booked, you enroll through your lender, and the discount applies from the date you enroll.[3] If your rate went up after you stopped autopay, this is the first thing to check.
Sunlight loan payoff, lien release and selling
- Payoff amount: ask the lender named on your agreement for a payoff quote for your closing or refinance date.[2] Check your agreement for any prepayment terms; Sunlight's public pages do not describe them.
- Lien: the CFPB says some solar loans are secured by a lien on the panels and others are unsecured.[9]
After payoff, get the lien released. Under UCC Section 9-513, for consumer goods the secured party must cause a termination statement to be filed within one month after nothing is owed, or within 20 days after it receives your authenticated (signed or electronic) demand if that is sooner. State versions vary.[11] Our UCC lien removal guide has a demand letter.
Selling the house: the CFPB says sellers with a solar loan typically either have the buyer assume the loan, if the lender permits it, or pay it off.[9] See selling a home with solar.
Sunlight Financial lawsuits
These are allegations, not findings. On March 8, 2024 the Minnesota Attorney General sued GoodLeap, Sunlight Financial, Solar Mosaic and Dividend Solar Finance in Hennepin County. The office alleged about $35 million in hidden fees on more than 5,000 Minnesota solar purchases (its headline says nearly 5,000 loans) and said most of the fees raised borrowers' costs by 15% to 30%.[8] We could not confirm the current status of the case.
The CFPB's 2024 report says some solar lenders add markups and fees that can raise the loan principal by 30% or more above the cash price.[9] If your loan amount was higher than the cash price you were quoted, keep both documents.
Your options with a Sunlight Financial loan
- Pay off or refinance with the lender's payoff quote. See solar loan refinance.
- Sell and pay off at closing, or ask the lender about an assumption.
- Raise installer problems with the loan holder. Consumer credit contracts arranged by a seller must carry the FTC Holder Rule notice, which says any holder of the contract is subject to the claims and defenses you could raise against the seller, and that your recovery cannot exceed what you paid under the contract.[10] Example: at least one Moxie Solar customer had a Sunlight loan on an unfinished system.
- Complain if the lender or servicer mishandles your account (below).
Complaints. The CFPB accepts complaints about personal loans (installment loans) and several other products; it says most companies respond within 15 days.[12] You can also file with your state attorney general. How-to: filing a CFPB complaint against a solar company.
We do not advise homeowners to stop making payments or breach contractual obligations. Missed payments can trigger late fees and other penalties under your loan agreement; a dispute is raised in writing while you keep paying.

Frequently asked questions
Who do I pay on a Sunlight Financial solar loan?
The lender named on the first page of your loan agreement and on your monthly bill. Sunlight says it only facilitates loans and that monthly payments are made to the lender, not to Sunlight.
Did Sunlight Financial go bankrupt?
Yes. Sunlight filed Chapter 11 on October 30, 2023 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware (lead case No. 23-11794), sold its business to an investor group that included Cross River Bank, and its amended prepackaged plan took effect on December 6, 2023.
Is Sunlight Financial still in business?
Yes. Sunlight Financial LLC still operates and now markets home improvement financing through contractors. Its public shares were canceled under the 2023 plan.

Is there a Sunlight Financial lawsuit?
Yes, as allegations: in March 2024 the Minnesota Attorney General sued Sunlight Financial, GoodLeap, Solar Mosaic and Dividend Solar Finance over alleged hidden fees on Minnesota solar loans.
