The answer

Checked October 20, 2026: Sungage Financial is not the lender. Most Sungage loans made from April 2025 on are issued by Hatch Bank and serviced by Launch Servicing; most earlier loans are with NBT Bank.[4] Sungage says there is no prepayment penalty and that its loans are secured by the solar equipment, with no lien taken on the home.[2]

Who is my lender on a Sungage loan?

Sungage says it "is not the lender for any of the products offered in our portal" and that loans available through Sungage are issued by Hatch Bank, a California-chartered industrial bank.[1] Its homeowner FAQ adds that Sungage Financial is not a bank and does not lease systems.[2]

Older loans differ. Sungage's guide for homeowners who move says most loans from April 2025 onward are with Hatch Bank (serviced by Launch Servicing) and most loans before April 2025 are with NBT Bank. You can confirm yours in your loan documents in the Sungage Homeowner Portal.[4]

What the Sungage lien covers

Sungage says its loan is secured by the solar equipment. "No lien is taken on the home," but a lien on the newly installed solar energy system is recorded in the real property registry.[2] That recorded filing is what a title company will see when you sell or refinance, so you need it released after payoff.

Sungage loan payoff and lien release

  1. No prepayment penalty: Sungage says you can prepay at any time with no penalty.[2]
  2. Payoff quote: Hatch Bank loans, call 877-742-2701 or use the Payment Portal; NBT Bank loans, email solarloanservice@nbtbank.com. Sungage says to allow at least 30 days, and NBT emails a quote with the terms for releasing the equipment lien.[4]

After payoff, get the lien released. Under UCC Section 9-513, for consumer goods the secured party must cause a termination statement to be filed within one month after nothing is owed, or within 20 days after it receives your authenticated (signed or electronic) demand if that is sooner. State versions vary.[9] Our UCC lien removal guide has a demand letter.

Selling a house with a Sungage loan: three options

From Sungage's moving guide, checked October 20, 2026.

1. Pay off from sale proceedsPayoff quote by phone or portal; Sungage calls this the best alternative for most homeownersEmail NBT to authorize the payoff
2. Buyer rolls the balance into their mortgage or new financingSame payoff quoteTitle company or lender needs your written authorization
3. Buyer assumes the loanCredit application and review; seller pays a $500 non-refundable processing feeNew credit application with a hard pull; may carry a processing fee and a new market rate

Allow about 30 days for each option.[4] Sungage does not finance pre-paid leases or PPAs, so these steps apply only to systems you own.[2] More: selling a home with solar.

Refinancing your mortgage? Sungage's FAQ says there are two options for handling the solar loan and points to its moving guide, but the version we read covers selling, not refinancing.[2][4] Ask Sungage before you lock a rate, and see refinance denied because of a solar loan.

Tax credit and paying down the loan

Sungage tells homeowners they can use savings and solar incentive proceeds to pay back the loan,[2] and its tax center links IRS Form 5695 for 2025.[5] The IRS says the Residential Clean Energy Credit covered property installed from 2022 through December 31, 2025 and is not available for property placed in service after that date.[6] The CFPB warns that many solar loans raise the payment at the 19th month if a tax-credit-sized prepayment is not made.[7] Check your agreement for any such feature.

Your options with a Sungage loan

  • Pay off or refinance (no prepayment penalty). See solar loan refinance.
  • Sell using one of the three options above.
  • Raise installer problems with the loan holder. Consumer credit contracts arranged by a seller must carry the FTC Holder Rule notice, which says any holder of the contract is subject to the claims and defenses you could raise against the seller, and that your recovery cannot exceed what you paid under the contract.[8]

Complaints. The CFPB accepts complaints about personal loans (installment loans) and several other products; it says most companies respond within 15 days.[10] You can also file with your state attorney general. How-to: filing a CFPB complaint against a solar company.

We do not advise homeowners to stop making payments or breach contractual obligations. Missed payments can trigger late fees and other penalties under your loan agreement; a dispute is raised in writing while you keep paying.
