Our company rankings are editorial opinions, not objective measurements. They represent what our editorial team believes are the best options for homeowners exploring solar contract exit services, based on the criteria described below. Different homeowners may have different needs, and our #1 pick may not be the best fit for every situation.
We encourage all readers to:
We evaluate solar contract exit companies across six categories. Each category is weighted based on what we believe matters most to homeowners seeking exit services.
We analyze publicly available customer reviews from sources including the Better Business Bureau (BBB), Google Reviews, Trustpilot, and consumer complaint databases. We look at overall star ratings, the volume of reviews, recency of reviews, and the nature of both positive and negative feedback. We do not use reviews that we cannot verify as coming from real customers.
We evaluate the breadth of services offered — whether a company handles lease buyouts, contract transfers, legal referrals, negotiation, and other exit methods. Companies that offer a wider range of legitimate exit approaches may score higher because they can serve a broader range of homeowner situations.
We assess whether a company is transparent about its pricing structure, whether fees are disclosed upfront or hidden, and whether the pricing model appears reasonable relative to the services provided. We rely on publicly available pricing information and reported customer experiences. We do not have access to confidential pricing for all companies.
We evaluate how many states a company serves and whether they have the infrastructure to help homeowners across different jurisdictions with varying state laws.
We research complaint filings with the BBB, state attorneys general, and consumer protection agencies. Companies with a pattern of unresolved complaints or regulatory actions may be ranked lower or excluded from our rankings entirely.
We consider how long a company has been operating, whether they employ or partner with licensed attorneys, and whether they hold relevant industry certifications or affiliations.
| Rating | Our Assessment |
|---|---|
| 4.5 – 5.0 ★ | In our opinion, an excellent option that excels across most evaluation criteria |
| 4.0 – 4.4 ★ | In our opinion, a strong option with some notable strengths |
| 3.5 – 3.9 ★ | In our opinion, a competent option with both strengths and weaknesses |
| 3.0 – 3.4 ★ | In our opinion, an adequate option with significant areas for improvement |
| Below 3.0 ★ | In our opinion, not recommended — significant concerns identified |
